Chicago firefighters will be handing out free smoke detectors this morning, after a little girl was killed in an apartment fire.

It happened in this building on the 1700 block of Juneway Terrace.

Three-year-old LeAndrea White set fire to a mattress in her family’s apartment.

She was alone in the bedroom at the time.

Her mother says she couldn’t find her in there as she tried to put out the fire.

But firefighters found her body on the bedroom floor, after they put out the flames.

The fire was contained to the room where it started.

Fire officials say the apartment didn’t have any working smoke detectors.
