Bears Release Peppers, Sign Four Players as NFL Free Agency Begins

A very busy day for Bears General Manager Phil Emery Tuesday.

As expected, the Bears released Julius Peppers, Peppers started all 64 games in the four seasons he was a Bear and recoreded 38 sacks.  Peppers release will free up approximately $10 million under the Bears salary cap.

Free Agency began at 3pm Tuesday and the Bears signed four defensive players.

The biggest signing was DE Lamarr Houston from the Raiders, Houston had six sacks last season, and is also good against the run.  Houston got a 5-year/$35 million contract.

The Bears also signed Safety Ryan Mundy to a 2-year contract, Mundy started nine games for the Giants last season.

DJ Williams was resigned to a one-year contract.  Williams was the Bears starting Middle Linebacker until an injury in Week 6 ended his season.  The Bears also signed LB Jordan Senn from Carolina, he will mainly contribute on special teams.
