Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian season of Lent.

The 40 days of repentance prepares the faithful for the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection on Easter Sunday.

At services today, ashes from burned palms will be placed on believers’ foreheads in the shape of a cross.

The ritual reminds worshipers of their mortality.
