How to Paint a Metal Radiator

Clean up that old cast iron radiator and restore it with just a few supplies and a fresh coat of paint.


  • Lead paint test kit
  • Appliance brush
  • Rigid bristle brush
  • Sanding sponge
  • Steel wool #2
  • Flexible putty knife
  • Household cleaner
  • Tack cloth
  • Gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Heat resistant spray paint
  • Respirator


  1. Check for lead paint
  2. Clean with appliance brush
  3. Use brush to loosen paint
  4. Sand down radiator
  5. Buff with steel wool
  6. Wipe with tack cloth
  7. Wipe down with cleaner
  8. 2 to 3 light coats of spray paint
