Emergency crews are on standby, as the cold weather brings on fears of ice damming near the Kankakee River.

People who live along its banks are on alert.

When the ice shifts, moves and cracks, residents living here only have minutes before ice as big as cars charges their homes.

The water could rise a number of feet within minutes.

Officials say the water can recede, as fast as it rises.

So Kankakee County officials are sizing up roads, bridges and the waterline.
