Residents near Kankakee River on alert; Ice jams threaten homes

The cold weather brings on fears of ice damming in Kankakee County.  Emergency teams are watching the river carefully as residents who live along its banks are on alert.

While nothing may happen for days, maybe weeks, when the ice shifts, moves and cracks, residents living here only have minutes before ice as big as automobiles charges their homes and the water rises a number of feet within a matter of minutes.

The water can recede, officials say, as fast as it rises. So Kankakee County is leaving nothing to chance. They are sizing up roads, bridges and the waterline, too
