Tribune Co. executive Jim Dowdle dies at 79

A sad note from the tribune family tonight… With news of the passing of jim dowdle… Who helped transform the tribune company into a major media conglomerate.

Dowdle had suffered from congestive heart failure. His family was with him until the end. He was 79.

Dowdle’s work at Tribune is legendary. His career began at the Tribune in 1956 as an advertising salesman. Eventually, Dowdle became president and CEO of Tribune Broadcasting Company during years of tremendous growth. Acquisitions of television stations and the Cubs are a result of his work.

He served on many charity boards throughout Chicago, and was also a director for the MccCormick Foundation. Dowdle received numerous awards from his peers in the media.

His visitation is  3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Donnellan Family Funeral Services in Skokie.

His funeral is at 10 a.m. Saturday at saints faith, hope and charity church in Winnetka.
