Suspect sought in religious sites vandalism in suburbs

Police in  the northern suburbs are seeking a suspect after two houses of worship were vandalized overnight, the latest in a string of defacing of religious sites in the last week.

This vandalism is being called a hate crime by the leaders of the houses of worship targeted in Waukegan as well as the mayor.

St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and the Islamic Foundation North were both spray painted  sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. Monday.

Police released a picture of the suspect believe is responsible for the crimes in Waukegan and at least ten more in Gurnee since Valentine ’s Day. They believe he is driving a light colored Nissan Rogue or Murano.

Leaders from the church mosque and city gathered outside both houses of worship in Waukegan to pray and denounce the crime today.
