Heavy snow on the ground and warm temperatures are going to mean flooding for the next few days.

icemeltingThe City of Chicago is already taking steps to give all the flood water a place to go.

Water crews are paying special attention to clearing the drains on city streets.

There’s also still a danger of water pipes freezing and cracking, since the ground is still frozen.

There are a few things homeowners can do to make sure that they don’t end up with water damage.

First order of business is removing snow from around your gutters.  Put down salt to melt any stubborn ice.

The idea is to get the water to flow away from the home.

For homeowners with ice dams in their gutters, home improvement experts recommend putting salt into an old pair of nylons.

Lay the ‘salt tube’ perpendicular to the ice dam.  This causes a groove so that the water can channel and it doesn’t keep building up.

And if you have a sump pump, it needs a checkup, to make sure it’s working.
