Man dies in apartment fire on West Side

Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal fire on the city’s West Side.

Firefighters received a call about the fire on the second floor of a building in the 500 block of S. Lavergne just before 5:30 p.m.

The victim, a man believed to be in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was found on the second flood in a bedroom where the fire started.

Investigators found a walker and cane in his unit, and believe the man was disabled.

There were working smoke detectors in the building.
