A 46-year-old Calumet Park woman is facing misdemeanor charges in connection with the death of a pit bull that died after being left outside in below freezing temperatures, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.

Tracy Cherry has been charged with animal cruelty and owner’s duties.

Sheriff’s Animal Crimes unit received a tip on Jan. 16 about a dog who was found dead in a dog house that was located outside an apartment in the 1400 block of West 123rd Street in Calumet Park.

Members of the Sheriff’s Animal Crimes Unit and the South Suburban Humane Society went to the location, found the dog’s body in the dog house, and removed it.

According to police, the 9-year-old male white pit bull died of hypothermia.

The recorded low for Calumet Park on Jan. 5 was -1 degree. The high on Jan. 6 was -1 degree, and the low, -15 degrees.

During the course of their investigation, Sheriff’s Police learned that the dog had been let out on the afternoon of Jan. 5 and had remained outside for about 12 hours.

Police also learned that Cherry found the dog’s body on January 6th.  Cherry’s next court date is scheduled for February 3rd.

This is sinful. Use your heads, people! An animal CANNOT tolerate the frigid temperatures and winds any more than you can. Bring your pets INSIDE. If you cannot do that, then bring your pets to the shelter. It is not fair to make an animal suffer because of your negligence or laziness. This woman deserves way more than a misdemeanor charge. She also deserves to be chained outdoors to that doghouse for a frigid night and see what it feels like. A dog or cat's coat is NOT enough for the animal to survive in these artic temperatures. Have some common sense. Thank you.
