Chicago hits new record low temperature

At 7 a.m. Monday, the mercury dropped to -15 at the city’s official thermometer at O’Hare International Airport breaking the record low for the date of  minus 14 established in 1988.

The day’s high of minus 2 was set  when the day began at midnight and will almost certainly not be surpassed,  thus breaking the days previous record low maximum of minus 1 established in 1912.

January 6, 2014 becomes the coldest January 6th in the city’s history dating back to 1871.
