The city welcomed its first baby of the new year just seconds after the clock struck 12:00 a.m.

Luis Anthony Marquez was born at Presence Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, only 30 seconds past midnight Wednesday.

He weighed in at seven pounds and two ounces.

No one even came close to challenging Luis for the honor, according to reports from other area hospitals.

His mother, Luz Marquez, 31, of Chicago, said she thought her son would arrive hours earlier on his due date, New Year’s Eve.

Marquez checked into the Northwest Side hospital at 1 p.m. Tuesday and gave birth 11 hours later.

Marquez said she was watching the count down to the new year on TV while in labor; she said she felt like the clock was counting her labor down as well.

Marquez said people were still cheering and celebrating ringing in the new year when she gave birth.
