Man charged in Christmas Eve crash that killed daughter, 8

A  26-year-old man has been charged with aggravated DUI in connection with a Christmas Eve crash that killed his 8-year-old daughter.

Jeffery Smith, of the 5600 block of South Wolcott Avenue, was charged with one felony count of aggravated DUI and was also issued citations for negligent driving, failure to reduce speed, and failure to adhere to child restraint regulations.

Lauren Smith died after the car her father was driving crashed in the 1000 block of West Garfield Blvd.

Authorities say the car hit a curb, and then a tree.

Witnesses say the car may have been speeding.

Emergency crews discovered the girl in the wreckage after they cut the driver out of the car.

Prosecutors say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
