12 years ago, a successful, suburban oral surgeon winds up at a hidden stretch below downtown Chicago.  And that is where this story begins.

Patrick Angelo says it came to him,  he had to do something to help the less fortunate.

“All of a sudden I found myself on Lower Wacker Drive and I never knew it existed.  Honest to God, I never knew it existed and there were basically a city of people down there,” he said.

He now drives back twice a week, alone but carrying plenty of help.

He’s made it a mission to feed and blanket the dozens of homeless who call Lower Wacker home.

For years, he tried to do more.  Trying to talk them into treatment centers or shelters but quickly realized that just wasn’t his place. He says they get the help when they’re ready.  His mission, at least for now, is simply to help them survive.

Patrick Angelo is one of Chicago’s Very Own.
