Developing: Off-duty Cook County sheriff’s police officer fatally shot in Bellwood

An off-duty Cook County sheriff’s police officer was fatally shot in Bellwood late Friday, authorities said.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced the death in an impromptu press conference in the west suburb.

Fire officials responded about 9 p.m. to a call of a man shot at the suburb’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, Lieutenant Bob Davis with the Belwood Fire Department said.

The post commander at the hall, Jerry Artis, said the shooting happened in the parking lot of the hall, which is located at 200 30th Avenue.

Artis did not have any further information.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed that someone was pronounced dead late Friday at Loyola University Medical after an apparent shooting. The office could not immediately provide additional information, a representative said.

Bellwood police did not immediately respond to request for comment.
