The City of Chicago rolled out a “Shop Local” campaign it’s hoping will generate some cash for local neighborhoods.
Ads blanket buses and trains promoting the 650 shops and restaurants in Little Village.
At one point the neighborhood was the top tax revenue producer for the City of Chicago behind Michigan Avenue. It’s not clear where it sits today but it is still considered to be among the top producers.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has dubbed it Chicago’s second Mag Mile. The area’s Chamber of Commerce wants to keep the area generating dollars and they believe getting people to shop in their community could help them ad city services and infrastructure.
The campaign is part of a larger effort by the city to promote small business creation.
The Mayor also developed a small business center on the 8th floor of City Hall to make it easier to attain permits and information.
Right now Little Village is dealing with some store front vacancies which they’re trying to address. There is also some development though going into that area with more commercial space being planned and a 22-acre park that’s expected to be done by next fall.
