Police in Gary are searching for 21-year old Jamal Haskins after he injured two veteran police officers after being ordered back to jail.

Police say Haskins broke free from handcuffs and another prisoner he was attached to, around 1:30 this afternoon.  They say he then became violent, kicking one police officer and shoving another down on the ground.

Haskins appeared in Special Services court for a status hearing on his compliance in a program that allows defendants who are mentally ill to defer prosecution.  A judge sentenced him to a year in jail after Haskins told the court he had not been meeting with his counselors.

Haskins is described as a black male, 5-ft.,6-in., weighing about 220 pounds with a short haircut. He was wearing all black clothing.
