Chicago’s South Side is getting a new Metra station in an area that hasn’t had one since the late 70’s.

The $20 million facility will be built on the Rock Island Line at 79th Street and Wallace Avenue in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

The station will be the only one on the line, between 35th and 87th streets.

Metra says the new station could potentially serve 400 weekday boardings.

While the project has been planned for years, Metra admits the funding only came about after Gov. Pat Quinn negotiated support from South Side legislators on programs he championed.
