The Hawks brought back a former Stanley Cup champion when they acquired winger Kris Versteeg from the Panthers in a trade late Thursday night.
In addition to bringing back Versteeg, who was a key member for the 2010 Cup winners, the Hawks acquired forward Phillippe Lefebrve is exchange for prospects Jimmy Hayes and Dylan Olsen.
Lefebrve will report directly to the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL. The Panthers also agreed to pay half of Versteeg’s salary.
“We’re really excited,” Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said. “Looking at our team this year, we’re off to a really good start. We came out of the gates the way we wanted to but we’re always trying to improve. Looking at our team we felt adding one more versatile forward to our group (was necessary).
“Kris, we obviously know him well from his years here and his ability to play a couple of different spots for us. He’s certainly capable of playing on the top line but we have a lot of depth at forward so we can use Kris in a couple of different places. He can help us on special teams as well. “
