An early morning flight out of O’Hare made an emergency landing after part of an engine covering fell off.

Spirit airlines flight 409 took off just after 5:30 a.m., headed for Fort Lauderdale, when a passenger noticed an engine cowling had ripped off the plane’s starboard side.

The plane returned safely to O’Hare and no one was hurt.

Inspection crews recovered the cowlings on airport property.

Spirit offered passengers refunds or the option of taking a later flight.
