Emergency crews responded to a chemical leak near Joliet Tuesday morning.

It happened at about 9:30 a.m. at Stepan Chemical Company in Elwood.

Emergency crews responded following the small release of a heat transfer fluid at the company’s plant on Millsdale Road, company officials said.

As a precautionary measure, 18 contractors who were nearby were evaluated. Sixteen of those contractors refused treatment and two were taken to the hospital for further evaluation, company officials said.

No employees were affected and there is no impact to the community.
