The push to toughen state exams for Illinois grade school students triggered widespread drop in test scores this year.
Hundreds of schools in the state’s poorest communities had the biggest drop in scores on the Illinois Standards Achievement Tests.
Schools in affluent suburbs, including Winnetka and Lake Forest, had less severe declines.
Chicago’s selective-enrollment schools had the highest percentage of students passing.
But students who usually get high scores are now “meeting the standards”, rather than excelling.
