The government will cut $5 billion in food stamp benefits this Friday.

Food stamp benefits were bumped up during the recession, but that temporary provision expires on November 1.

Congress has the power to halt the cutback, but experts say that’s unlikely to happen.

More than 47 million Americans get food stamps – that’s about 15 percent of the population.

The average benefit is about $133 per person.
