Mundelein police say a man abducted a 3-year old girl from in front of her home, drove off for 30 minutes and then returned her to a parking lot near the point of abduction.
Police are not sure what happened in those 30 minutes on Tuesday.
They are running tests and trying to question the girl as best they can. She was returned with no obvious signs of trauma.
Mundelein police say they’ve never seen anything like it.
“In my 19 years of being police officer, I don’t recall an offender bringing a victim back to its crime scene,” said police chief Eric Guenther
It was 5:30 p.m. Monday when the girl followed her mother and her 9-year-old sister inside an apartment complex in the 500 block of Deepwoods Dr. The girl found herself trapped inside the vestibule with her sister. A stranger was also among them.
That stranger then took off with the child in a car.
Police were called and arrived on the scene almost immediately.
Two teenage girls told a neighbor they too had been approached by the same guy in a 4-door Hyundai which is described as black or blue with after market wheels that make it stand out.
“They said this guy who snatched the baby had approached them and asked if they want some candy. They said no,” said neighbor Alberto Swall.
While investigators were still on the scene, the offender came back.
Police were floored to learn the girl had been dropped back off at the complex and slipped away without a trace.
The girl was reunited with her mother right away.
Tuesday, members of the community handed out fliers in the Deepwoods Apartments warning of the abductor still on the loose.
