An airline captain who suffered a heart attack mid-flight, causing his United Airlines plane to divert to Boise, Idaho, died Thursday night, the airline said Friday.

United Airlines Flight 1603 was on its way to Seattle from Houston when it diverted to Boise, Idaho, at 8 p.m. MT (10 p.m. ET), said Patti Miller.

A passenger aboard the plane told CNN affiliate KOMO that a crew member asked passengers over the loudspeaker, in flight, if anyone on board was a physician.

A member of the crew also told air traffic control, “We got a man down, chest compressions going on right now. I’m not sure too much right now,” KOMO reported.

Paramedics boarded the plane upon its landing and took the pilot to a hospital.

The pilot was brought to Saint Alphonsus hospital and died afterward, hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Krajnik said.

The Boeing 737 airliner and its passengers waited at the Boise airport until the airline flew in another pilot from San Francisco.
