2 dead, baby injured after lightning strikes in Gary

An apparent lightning strike caused a house fire in Gary, Indiana Thursday afternoon, leaving a 45-year old man dead and a 9-month old in critical condition.

In a separate incident also in Gary, a man working on a billboard was struck and killed by lightning.

According to Gary Fire Department Chief of Operations Mark  Jones, the fire department responded to a home in the 1100 Block of Jefferson Court after reports of smoke coming from the home.

The fire department searched the home and found the two occupants, both unconscious. Jacquelyn Allen was transported to Gary Northlake Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 9-month-old was airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. No word on the baby’s condition.

Also, 28-year-old  Angelo Santucci of Hobart, IN was working on a billboard along 27th Avenue and was struck by lightning, according to Jones.  Santucci transported to Gary Methodist in cardiac arrest.  He did not survive.
