How to Make a Planter Box

Planter boxes are a great way to bring some of nature to city living. Whether you want to add a little greenery to your apartment balcony, are looking for a great space to plan herbs, or just in the market for a fun DIY project, our expert Kaisa Dille of K. Dille Designs has your step-by-step plan for making your own planter box:


  • Untreated 2×4’s and 1×6’s
  • Chop saw
  • Two 1/2 inch and 3 inch screws
  • Orbital sander
  • Drill
  • Tape measure
  • Spar urethane
  • Paint brush
  • Safety goggles
  • Rope
  • Screw eyes
  • Scissors
  • Dust mask


  1. Cut wood to size
  2. Lightly sand 1×6’s
  3. Assemble frame and box
  4. Attach screw eyes
  5. Apply spar urethane and attach rope

This task is moderately difficult and will take about two hours. Cost: $30.
