Nearly 100 residents of the Sauganash neighborhood on the Northwest Side took part this morning in a solidarity walk along the Sauganash Trail.

The event might best be described as a new kind of power walk.

Many of the participants were women, including Alderman Margaret Laurino (39th Ward) who told the crowd, “We’re not going to let the bad guys take over.”

Recent events have brought the close-knit community even closer.

Police have yet to make an arrest in last Thursday’s attack on a female police officer while she was jogging on the trail.  She described a light-skinned Hispanic suspect in his 20’s.

Another female officer described a similar attack and suspect two days earlier on another nearby trail.

Residents say fighting back with community power helps.

Alderman Laurino says the community will also look into ways to improve trail safety, including trimming trees or possibly adding security cameras.
