The mayor of Minneapolis is courting gay couples in Chicago, to get married in his city.

Minnesota legalized same-sex marriages on August 1.

An effort to do the same in Illinois stalled in Springfield.

So Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak is coming to Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood Thursday to advertise the marriage opportunities that his city has.

That would give an economic boost to his local wedding businesses.

“I’m a strong supporter of marriage equality and I hope someday Illinois will take away the advantage Minnesota has,” Rybak said.

“Hey Chicago! I want to marry you in Minneapolis” is part of the ad campaign being run in Chicago newspapers.

Rybak’s visit has the blessing of Mayor Emanuel, who sees this as a way to get Illinois lawmakers moving on approving gay marriage.

Chicago is the first stop on his campaign.

He also plans to go to Milwaukee, Madison, Denver, and possibly Detroit.

“These are all logical parts of the center of the country where some people don’t have the same rights as in Minnesota,” Rybak told the Chicago Tribune.
