Funeral services are still being arranged for former Chicago Police Supt. LeRoy Martin.
Martin’s family says he died of a heart attack over the weekend.
Martin joined the Chicago Police Department in 1955.
He was appointed superintendent in 1987 by Mayor Harold Washington, making him the second African American to lead the department.
Martin once served as Jon Burge’s commander and denied knowing about the abuse of crime suspects. He later tried to fire Burge.
Martin was 84.
