A marine sergeant from Zion will be honored today for rescuing an injured colleague in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Luis Garcia’s unit was stationed in the dangerous Helmand province in May of 2012; the unit had split up to perform surveillance when two of Garcia’s fellow troops were mistakenly shot by members of his own team.

Garcia sprang into action, pulled one of the men to safety and helped him breathe, despite a bad chest wound.

Today, Garcia will be awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal at Naval Station Great Lakes.
