A 6-year-old boy riding in a car with his mom was shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood overnight, according to police.

Chicago Police said the boy was sitting in the car with his mother in the 4200 block of West Wilcox about 11:30 p.m., when the doors of a passing van opened and someone inside began firing.

Mario Cotton was sitting on his porch nearby when the shooting occurred.

“They pulled up and started to shoot and it was just gunfire everywhere. I was sitting on the porch and I ran into the house. That’s the only thing I saw really, just a whole lot of gunfire,” Cotton said.

Cotton said he believes the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity as the mother and her son were parking their car just steps from their home.

Mario’s mother Kwana Jones was preparing to throw a birthday party for her 9-year-old son, a party that the shooting victim was supposed to attend.

“These people on this block, these are good people. And the kids, they play with all the kids, so I don’t know what happened,” Kwana Jones said.

Jones said this is usually a quiet street, but she’ll tell all of her seven children to now be more vigilant and more aware of their surroundings when playing outside.

“These kids need to play outside. You just need to watch everything that is going on around you. They’ve got to play,” Jones said.

The little boy is in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, and family members said he is expected to make a full recovery.

No one is in custody for the shooting. Chicago Police continue to investigate.
