Elgin woman dies in skydiving accident

An Elgin woman died after a skydiving jump went wrong in LaSalle County, according to officials.

Stephanie Eggum, 32, crashed into a cornfield north of Ottawa around 1:30 pm Friday. She had cut her main parachute but deployed her reserve parachute at a low altitude.

Eggum was an experienced skydiver; she had taken up the hobby since she was 18. Eggum had also been injured in a skydiving accident in 2001, in which she suffered a concussion.

In addition to skydiving, Eggum was also an avid drag racer who turned pro in 2004. She had begun drag racing after her first skydiving accident.
