A 90-year-old man dies after he drove his vehicle into a pond in Arlington Heights on Friday.

The vehicle went into the pond in the 1500 block of Courtland Drive around 7 a.m.

One of the victims’ neighbors, Kay Sullivan, says she was having breakfast on her balcony when she suddenly heard a loud bang, and a grinding sound. Her balcony started to collapse, so she ran inside her home and called 911.

One of her neighbors jumped into the pond to try to save the man.

“I jumped in, swam out, pulled on the doors, tried to smash one of the windows, and then I had a neighbor who came out to try to help me,” said Rick Geiger.

“My just instinct was get him out,” added Geiger.

Eventually, first responders pulled the victim from the vehicle.

The victim was taken to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name hasn’t been released.

An investigation is underway, but police and fire officials believe the victim may have been trying to back into his garage but went forward instead.
