Installing a programmable thermostat is the quickest and easiest way to take control of your energy costs. Being able to regulate the temperature in your home will help save your money when you’re not around. As the Mensch with a Wrench, Michael Goldstein tells us, it’s easy to do yourself.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • the programmable thermostat unit w/batteries
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Mini-slotted screwdriver

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Turn off power to furnace
  2. Remove old cover plate
  3. Label wires
  4. Remove old bracket
  5. Mount new bracket
  6. Reconnect wires
  7. Attach new cover plate
  8. Restore power

It’s an easy DIY project that won’t take more than 20 minutes. Your only cost is the thermostat itself and the batteries that go with it.
