A 13-year-old boy is dead after a canoe capsized Monday night, in a retention pond in far northwest suburban Harvard.

Two other teens were rescued, one pulled to shore by a witness, the other by firefighters who arrived at about 7:30 p.m. and found him clinging to the overturned canoe.

A dive team located the victim about an hour later.

The pond is in the 800 block of Apple Valley Road.

Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead a short time later at Mercy Harvard Hospital.

Very sad and I can't imagine the greif that this family is now dealing with. Could these children swim? If not, why were they on a canoe?
