Metra worker struck, killed near 47th Street

A Metra worker struck and killed Friday afternoon on Metra’s Electric District Line near 47th Street.

The accident occured around 1:30 p.m. as the worker was performing general maintenance.

The No. 223 train was headed to south suburban Blue Island when it struck the worker.

In a statement, Metra identified the victim as Luis Mercado, 36, a trackman who has worked for Metra since May 2001.

“The entire Metra family is deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of one of our own.  We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mercado,” the statement said.

Trains on the electric line experienced delays as a result of the accident, and all lines have now re-opened.

Metra says the circumstances of the accident are under investigation.
