Mayor Rahm Emanuel unveiled plans Wednesday for a new domestic violence shelter in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
It’s the first expansion of a domestic violence shelter in Chicago in more than a decade.
Mayor Emanuel became emotional when he praised survivors for overcoming tough situations and helping others in need.
The suite-based facility will accommodate 100 families, increasing the number of available beds in Chicago by 36%.
The cost of the project is $4.2 million. Construction is expected to begin in the Fall, and the facility will open in June of 2014.
