One of the world’s greatest collections of natural history could be subject to deep cuts.

The Sun Times reports the Field Museum is millions of dollars over-budget each year.

A big chunk of the museum’s $170 million debt comes from creating an underground storage facility that opened in 2005.

Officials say the museum will need to cut costs by letting go of tenured staff.

16 of the museum’s 27 curators have already been offered early retirement packages.
