Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry paid tribute to fallen diplomats, including River Forest native Anne Smedinghoff on Friday.

Her name was added to a memorial at the State Department, along with the names of those killed in the September 2012 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Smedinghoff died in a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan last month.

She was delivering books to schools for the foreign service.

Biden called the victims’ passion for their work “astounding.”
