Food Service workers at Chicago Public Schools plan to rally outside school board headquarters Tuesday afternoon for healthier meals.

Lunchroom workers are calling for more fresh, cooked foods in schools.

They plan to submit petitions urging the board to phase out pre-packaged frozen meals.

CPS lunch ladies and lunchroom workers have gathered over 2,100 petition signatures from the parents and grandparents of over 3,400 CPS kids, as well as workers and community members in support of fresh foods.

About 25 percent  of schools serve them,  but the workers say CPS has a chance to improve the quality of meals as they shop for a new food service contract.

The board plans to spend $228 million on the program.
