The Red Cross and Salvation Army are handing out cleanup kits Saturday, throughout several Illinois counties hit hard by flooding.

A Red Cross trailer was set up at Des Plaines New Apostolic Church to help those affected by the flood. The flood warning in Des Plaines is set to expire Saturday afternoon. The river has been slowly dropping, although as of Friday night it was still 6 inches over the flood stage.

Many homeowners suffered thousands of dollars in water damage and lost belongings, when the storm hit more than a week ago. The kits are free of charge, and contain things like mops, brooms, garbage bags, and bleach.

City officials said residents should remember to get a permit for any work or construction they do on their homes.
