Sunday’s warm and sunny spell will be just a brief respite for the Chicago area.

Temperatures are expected to jump quickly during the afternoon, reaching highs in the 70s for only the second time this year.

Showers and thunderstorms are due to arrive Sunday night, signaling an end to the area’s brief spell of above normal temperatures.

On Monday, a cold front is forecast to pass across the area, eventually shifting winds to the northeast. Similar to last week, a prolonged period of cool winds off Lake Michigan is forecast to limit temps to the 40s and 50s across all but far southern portions of the metro area.

Meanwhile, warm, moist air aloft is expected to provide the region with periodic thunderstorms through Wednesday night. Storm clusters Wednesday and Wednesday night may contain heavy rainfall and hail.
