German Shorthaired Pointers are just one of the best family dogs out there, but potential adopters definitely need to do their homework and research the breed. Because they are hunting dogs, capable of running 15-20 miles in an outing, they truly NEED exercise on a daily basis. If you can offer that, and if you have the capacity to laugh out loud at the clown of the dog world, this wonderful dog is for you!

Adoption is the BEST option, whether you want a pure bred dog or a mutt… but definitely do your homework on specific breeds if you have one in mind. Just because you like the look of a dog, does not mean THAT dog will be the best FIT for YOUR family/lifestyle. AND ALWAYS ADOPT… check or google breed rescues in your area. THANK you WGN for being there to highlight the breed rescues and adoptable dogs in the Chicagoland area….

Beautiful dogs that make wonderful pets if you provide love, exercise and patience. I've had 5 German Shorthairs and don't plan on changing anytime soon! Adopt, don't shop….please. There are so many dogs that need caring families and adoption.

We have had four German Shorthair Pointers. They are wonderful dogs! They do need exercise, but are the most loving dog I have ever had. We currently have two, one of which we adopted from the Illinois Shorthair Rescue last year. He is a great dog and such a loverboy ! The Illinois Shorthair Rescue is a wonderful rescue group!
