gay-marriageA bill that would legalize same sex-marriage in Illinois passed its first major hurdle Tuesday.

The Senate Executive Committee approved Senate Bill 10 by a vote of 9-5 — that means it could go for a full vote in the state Senate soon.

Senate President John Cullerton said earlier he wanted to have a vote on the bill on Valentine’s Day next Thursday.

Senators heard testimony from both sides of the issue Tuesday before taking the committee vote.

The Senate tried to pass the bill in January’s lame duck session, but it never got out of committee.

As a member of the LGBT community, I'm so happy to hear this news! Finally men and women are a step closer to being able to marry their loves regardless of sex.

Please don't call it 'marraige', call it something else because the term 'marraige' is, by definition, between one man and one woman… Between two men or two women, it can be anything else with the exact same rights as marriage. Gays and Lesbians should respect the definition and make up another term for their needs. The term 'marriage' always had the idea of two different genders. If man has been on the Earth this long without a change in the definition why change it now? The gay and lesbian population changed have changed words to suit their needs. The term 'gay' cannot be used to represent 'joy'. Using 'gay' in a sentence must not be used negatively toward anyone or you are slammed as a bigot. This is particularly unfair to heterosexuals who used the word freely in the past to mean one thing only… joy/happiness. Now, it is sexual. This upsets me but my gay friends would tell everyone that I am a homophobe for asking them to stop changing definitions. You won't stop until you get your way. Oh what a world where morality is judged in the public square and not on absolute values.

Absolutely right! We say something that opposes them, we are called bigots and homophobes? What about them bending everything to favor their own interests? Why do we always have to give way to them and "respect" them? How can respect be earned if their ways and ideologies are against the natural truth of a man being with a woman? This has gone too far, we have let our legislators ride on the gender card for their political interests to stay in power. Its a shame.

Congratulations for joining the 21st century, Illinois! As for the rest of you, get along the right side of history because you will be left behind. Open your eyes and your hearts. This is not about “definition”. This is about equality, prosperity, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Denying the existence of another human being is not just inhumane, it is wrong. Nobody denies your right to throw away your “sacred union”. There is not much of a leg to stand on when 50% of all heterosexual marriages end in divorce. Please, by all means, throw your rock-hard definitions and sanctity in your glass houses and shatter the lives of those around you (because that is the just thing to do).

All this homophobic, full of hate people that commented here, I wish you would have a gay child or grand child, lets see if you like that the same right to get married is deny to your child or grand child. Marriage is a right that ech one has in this country, ignorant, hypocrite, homophobic, and full of hate people

Our legislators who are Catholic should do the right thing and vote against same sex marriage and that includes our governor. Our religion is opposed to homosexuality and they will have to answer to God for voting to keep their positions instead of following the church teachings.
Examine your conscience legislators, one day you will have to answer to a God for your actions.
    Eternity is forever!

I disagree. The hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church have a very unnatural view of human sexuality. They strongly oppose sex before marriage, masturbation, same-sex marriage, birth control, etc. But the laity of the same church has much more accepting views on these and other sex-related questions.

    • Equality for all

Las time I checked, Coco, there are Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists that live in this country as well. One day, YOU will have to answer to God for YOUR actions. "Is this where you want to be when jesus comes back?" Judging your brothers and sisters? Denying them their right to love and happiness? Even denying them their right to worship in God's house?

  • John

So many thumbs down. Lots of gay people here. Lots of ignorant men denying that their penises are meant for vaginas. Penises are not meant for another man's orifice. Does the stag mate with another stag? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out. Control your sick minds.

Maybe some of you DEVOUTLY RELIGIOUS Folks can explain why there is NO SUCH OUTCRY about "Heterosexual Divorce" (When a Married Man and Woman decide to END their GOD SUPPORTED Matrimony).

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that Divorce is in The Bible someplace as an Abomination:

Yet you N E V E R hear a Darn Thing about "Ending the Abomination of a PROPERLY MARRIED Man and Woman TERMINATING their GOD Ordained Matrimonial Relationship"

I'm curious if I'll get any answers at all — "Have at it" folks…….
