An off-duty Chicago police detective died of an apparent heart attack Sunday night in a South Loop apartment building.

A department spokesman says the 54-year-old, 30-year veteran of the force was found unresponsive in a hallway just after 10 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene about a half-hour later when efforts to revive him failed.

The spokesman says security footage from the building shows the officer clutch his chest before falling to the hall floor.
