Officer shot by suspected bank robbers

A  police officer in Hammond, Ind., is shot while responding to a bank robbery, sparking a chase that ended with the two suspects arrested in Gary.

David Lee Hardin, 24, and Brealon Miller, 24, are charged with armed robbery. Additional charges are pending. Both men are from Gary.

The 34-year old officer was shot 3 times in the leg in the parking lot of the BMO Harris bank at 7250 Indianapolis boulevard, just before 11 .a.m Friday, said Hammond police Chief Brian Miller.

Police chased the two alleged bank robbers for nearly eight miles. They were arrested near 8th Avenue and Hovey Street in Gary. Investigators recovered money and a weapon.

The officer was being treated for non-life threatening injuries at community hospital in munster, police said.
