An elderly, retired West Side man died in a house fire Sunday morning.  The fire broke out inside a single family home in West Garfield Park.

Parishioners at the church next door noticed heavy smoke coming from the house and immediately called the fire department.

Fire fighters found 75-year-old Mathew Nelson inside the home.

Neighbors say they tried to revive him at the scene.

Nelson was in critical condition when he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Nelson’s wife and three adopted children were not home at the time of the fire.

Two of the family’s four pets also died.

There was no working smoke alarm inside the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
