An elderly woman on the South Side is dead in part because of the cold weather.

Police say it was only 24-degrees inside the home of 83-year-old Florence Hawkins who lived on the 8200 block of South Chappel Avenue.

A relative says she put a blanket over Hawkins before she left for work on Monday.

But when she came back Tuesday morning, she says Hawkins wouldn’t wake up.

Police say she died of cold exposure and heart disease.

Hawkins is the first confirmed cold-related death in Cook County this season.
